Colors of You
There's a canvas in my heart
Where the sun sets on the horizon
And the moon is slowly rising
Over the ocean blue
Where golden rays of light
Cross shooting star filled skies
Yeah life seemed so much brighter
The day that I found you
I've been thinking of you
Thinking of me
Footprints in my mind
Tiptoeing through my dreams
It’s the colors of you
They're coloring me
I was black and white
Baby you set me free
Right when your lips touched mine
Like a red rose opening wide
Deep in the freezing night
Blossoming wild and free
On shores where the rolling tide
With a rhythm so hypnotizing
Endlessly they're comprising
All that my eyes can see
(Chorus)
Baby you set me free
With a brush I know was destiny
You painted the perfect nature scene
Hung it inside of me
You're truly one of a kind
A priceless masterpiece so fine
Reminding me of that place in time
I finally got all I need
(Chorus)
On Our Way
It was a warm October morning
Standing by that yellow cab
Three children in the window
Waving down to their old man
So young to ask the question
Wondering bout the reason why
A promise to my country
Meant they had to say goodbye
I told them angels-
Made us go our separate ways
Our paths set out before us
Gonna leave it up to fate
I said- Freedom's free in heaven
But down here we have to pay
As angels sing the chorus
Waiting at the pearly gates
On our way
On our way
So much time grew between us
Didn't recognize my wife
The way the children seen us
I never wished in all my life
So young to ask the question
Wondering bout the reason why
Some grow old together
And others never try
I told them angels-
Made us go our separate ways
Our paths set out before us
Gonna leave it up to fate
I said- There's no tears in heaven
Even though it sometimes rains
As angels sing a chorus
Waiting at the pearly gates
On our way
On our way
It's so hard to see tomorrow
When you can't forget the past
These lines are getting deeper
The kids are growing fast
Still young to ask the question
Wondering bout the reason why
Heaven's here among us
And I'm looking at the sky
I told them angels-
Made us go our separate ways
Our paths set out before us
But it never is too late
I said heaven's here among us
Well right now that sure sounds great
As angels sing the chorus
Waiting at the pearly gates
On our way
On our way
It was a warm October morning
Standing by that yellow cab
Three angels in the window
Waving down to their old man...
Tailor Fit For Me
I never wondered why you left
Another mannequin like me
Always answered my own question
If you love it- set it free
You sewed the dreams that filled my nights
Fallen feathers from my wings
The blanket of my inner child
Girl you tailored everything
Now the closet’s closed again
And I can’t seem to find the words
Time is slowly wearing thin
In this ever changing world
Started growing up too fast
Now I’m splitting at the seams
Didn’t know just what I had
You were tailor fit for me
I wasn’t meant to lose the buttons
They were threaded oh so tight
To the fabric of your love
Every bit was just my size
Spread it all out on the table
Like puzzle pieces cut precise
You designed the perfect label
For the lining of our life
(Chorus)
I keep searching empty pockets
No tricks left up my sleeves
Staring through a broken mirror
Naked truth is all I see
Alone I go to bear the weather
Tearing strings off of my heart
The only thing we wore together
Finally has come apart
(Chorus)
Mai Tais In Paradise
Let's leave the world behind
I got a place in mind
There's palm trees and sun tans!
I think that we can find
Some reasons to unwind
With cold drinks- in both hands!
Cuz there's this song they keep on playing every night
And I can't wait to hear it- in the sand so white!...
AA Mai Tais in Paradise
Under the moonlit sky
AA Mai Tais in paradise
Until the morning light
AA Mai Tais in paradise
Raise your glasses high
AA Mai Tais in paradise
Mai Tai one on tonight!
Bare feet and bloodshot eyes
It's great to be alive
We’re all swaying to the band!
Lime juice and rum on ice
Mixed with the spice of life
You’ll find on this island!
I never dreamed the ocean'd ever look so blue
It’s time to be set free- from hell that we've been through!
Chorus
I know we all deserve- some time to just hang loose...
They’re words worth singing if you think you need one too!
Chorus
200 Proof
It’s almost two a.m.
And I’m chasing whiskey sours with a fifth of gin
I guess it’s probably too late to call
But every now and then
I raise a toast to you when I stumble in
You got me falling for you after all!
It seems like lately I’ve been drinking a lot
Trying so damn hard to get you off my mind
I keep twisting caps and popping tops
Been living my life- straight up on the rocks
Still ain’t tasted a drop that could waste me quite like you…
You’re 200 Proof
Dawn is rolling in
And that Kid Rock song’s coming on again
You know the one he did with Sheryl Crow
Remember way back when
I poured my heart to you like a black and tan
You never told me it was for the road!
It seems like lately I’ve been drinking a lot
Trying so damn hard to get you off my mind
I turned the blender up to the highest notch
Spilled a ton of rum dumping in the scotch
Still ain’t tasted a drop that could waste me quite like you…
You’re 200 Proof
Time is wearing thin
While I’m sinking down to my bitter end
Didn’t think you’d ever see me drown
Started about ten
Gonna have me one or two just like I said
Baby I’m losing count!
It seems like lately I’ve been drinking a lot
Trying so damn hard to get you off my mind
I’ve been slurring my words the whole night long
Lifting twelve ounce curls- a million strong
Still ain’t tasted a drop that could waste me quite like you…
You’re 200 Proof
Life Like Mine
Well it’s a beautiful night to be out for a ride
My baby and me without a care in sight
Some moonlight fishing is our only mission tonight!
She knows wearing them shorts in that flatbed Ford
Got the sinner in me- saying “Oh my lord”!
Looking like some fine southern cooking done just right…
It’s only fifteen miles off the 85
Down a country road nearly no one drives
Some lovin, belly rubbin and some old time Tennessee rye!
Who has a life like mine??
We didn’t bring to much- just a few small things
A bottle of booze and an old six string
Reservations for two at a little ole lake campsite!
Put “do not disturb” on that “no swimming” sign
Figured the words would better suit the time
Forgetting the world as we curled by the warm fire light!
It’s only fifteen miles off the 85
Down a country road nearly no one drives
Some lovin, belly rubbin and some old time Tennessee rye!
Bullfrogs croaking near the water line
My hound dog’s chewing on an old buck tine
Sweet Georgia peaches falling underneath a star filled sky!
Who has a life like mine??
Some time before dawn the rain was pouring down
Dog snuck in before he surely drowned
Might be luck but the tent stayed up and we’re dry.
Had some marshmallow left on my bottom lip
The breakfast in bed she didn’t think she’d get
I can tell by her smile that it’s tasting just the way she likes!
It’s only fifteen miles off the 85
Down a country road nearly no one drives
Some lovin, belly rubbin and some ole time Tennessee rye!
There’s a cat fish pulling out a spool of line
While my hands keep looking for a place to hide
The day’s drifting away and I’m a say it for you one more time…
Who has a life like mine??
Outta the Blue I Love You
If you wanna know-
How I wake up every day more in love than before
It started way back with a note that you wrote and tacked on my door!
I see the crystal ball so crystal clear
When that hot shower’s steaming up the bathroom mirror-
You wrote it there- Without a care
While you finished blow drying- your long blonde hair!
There’s a white piece of paper in my tackle box
For some light reading later at my favorite spot!
It’s not what you say- It’s about what you do
A little outta your way- To give an outta the blue
I love you! Yes I do!
Everywhere I go
You got a real clever way to make me feel adored
You’re always so kind- and sometimes I think- a little bit bored!
I see the crystal ball so crystal clear
When there’s black magic marker on my last cold beer-
You wrote it there- Without a care
You knew my long hard day wasn’t all I would share!
There’s an insurance slip with it scribbled on top
For if I’m stuck in the mud or getting stopped by the cops!
It’s not what you say- It’s about what you do
A little outta your way- To give an outta the blue
I love you! Yes I do!
In fifty years or so
There’s one thing for sure I know will never get old
It starts with an “I” and ends with a “You”!
With you by my side- the words will always be true!
I see the crystal ball so crystal clear
There’s a million different ways if you’re really sincere-
You wrote it there- Without a care
Outta the clear blue sky- nothing else will compare!
It’s in the lipstick stains on the side of my cheek-
Every month of the year- every day of the week!
It’s not what you say- It’s about what you do
A little outta your way- To give an outta the blue
I love you! Yes I do!
Sin City
That devil on my shoulder had a plan to make
His angel counterpart was off one Saturday
Well I knew right away the place he wished to take us
Booked a flight and headed west to Vegas
Day dreams of slot machines and jackpots filled my mind
Don't have a lot of green but it won’t hurt to try
I never seen a desert town get down so gritty
Tonight we’re raising hell in sin city!
Bright lights and limousines to get us in the mood
I comped a penthouse suite from Planet Hollywood
There’d sure be hell to pay if heaven only knew
The things this party’s doing in my room!
(Chorus)
That angel checked back in as I unpacked my bag
I had a new tattoo and jet lag real bad
I bowed my head in shame but he said with a grin
Son- even angels take a day for sin!
(Chorus)
Stepping Stones
There’s a ten acre plot- with a stream running through it
Where summers are hot but the water might cool it
Got a beautiful spot in mind to lay the first bricks down
Gonna build me a fence maybe plant me a garden
Picking my rent- you bet I’ll never go starving
I said what I meant- this time I’m really going all out!
There’s stepping stones to get to my home
The path I roam’s less traveled on
Ain’t no bridges or roads- to get where I’m going
It’s a little wild and overgrown
Got tender love but needing some care
It ain’t gonna take too long
Maybe I’ll see you there
Been working nonstop- pulling shifts at the factory
Punching the clock- counting minutes exactly
Just like the rocks I’ll be jumping on to get my mail
Friends with the neighbors cuz they keep me from swimming
A family of beavers- could give a dam how I’m living
I see them each morning as I’m heading out the end of my trail!
Chorus
When I stopped into town- I saw this hot thing shopping
Making her rounds behind those blue jean pockets
Whistling sounds blaring out from all directions
Well I gave it a shot- hey what was I losing
Told her the plot- don’t come with your shoes on
You got the right spot if you’re staring at your own reflection!
Chorus
Tic Tac Toe
Have you ever waited for the very first time they would call?
Anticipating the ways those cards with hearts would fall?
Then a few days later they finally text you a couple lines
Saying all there is to say in the secret way that they signed!
X’s and O’s the kinda lovin that I’m feeling right now
I can only suppose a kiss and hug is how it’s ending somehow
Though there’s always the hope that there’s a little bit more they will allow
Well you’re gonna know if it’s three in a row…
You’re getting tic-tac-toe!
Something about those two letters when you place them side by side
They separate the real go getters from the ones that play it shy
Ain’t nothing better than when that cell phone starts to chime
You can tell from a mile away if they’re reading what’s on your mind!
Chorus
Straight across or diagonal- it really don’t matter how they fall
You go first- I’ll follow- I’m not scared to bare it all
I can’t wait to hear your voice and to see those smiling eyes
Taste your lips and feel your touch like I read it a thousand times!
Chorus
One Way Flight from Nowhere
It was the same bad news- another soldier down- was a local kid- from my home town- who dreamed one day- he'd own his daddy's farm-
They folded up that flag- gave it to his mom- with a last goodbye and a bible psalm she held it tight- like a baby in her arms.
Saying... Somewhere there's a plane tonight with an empty seat on a one way flight from nowhere and that's the way its gotta be- You see my boy he loved to play guitar he liked football games and fancy cars- he was too young- but at least my son died free!
It was a quiet drive down to Forest Glenn- like a movie scene from a few good men- when we got there- and they fired that first round-
Wasn't one dry eye for that gun salute- except a couple guys wearing combat boots beside him- as they laid him in the ground.
Saying... somewhere there's a plane tonight with an empty seat on a one way flight from nowhere and that's the way its gotta be- You see our friend he liked to joke a lot- he thought Tara Reid was so damn hot- he was the best shot- our sergeant ever seen
We should be touching down about 5 a.m.- I’ve been trying to sleep but the air's too thin- Didn't think this trip was ever gonna end.
I got some new boots on and my head held high- I'm with my whole platoon- some real good guys- and I don't know why- but it feels like home again
Saying... somewhere there's a plane tonight with an empty seat on a one way flight from nowhere and that's the way its gotta be- I made sure I told my mom goodbye and there's a real nice photo I'm leaving behind at the legion post a few blocks up the street- so if you see my picture there on that wall among the unsung heroes who gave their all then you'll know just what- the word freedom means to me!
Saying… Somewhere there's a plane tonight with an empty seat on a one way flight from nowhere and that's the way its gotta be!
And that’s the way its gotta be!
Pillows and Covers
I’ve forgotten already
What we were fighting about
It wasn’t nothing too heavy
Thought we’d figure it out
Now I’m down here alone just hoping-
We’re still best friends
Remote control to help me coping-
Guess that depends!
It was a long night-
It wasn’t like any other-
Was the first time
You gave me pillows and covers
And I went down
To sleep on the couch with Leno on!
I keep on wondering why
Sometimes it happens to lovers
When neither one seems to try
But they both love one another…
Chorus
I started folding the blankets
Wiping sleep from my eyes
Can’t believe that I made it
On a chair that size!
I’m up now alone just hoping-
We’re still best friends
Breakfast pans to help me coping-
Guess that depends!
It was a long night-
It wasn’t like any other-
Was the first time
You gave me pillows and covers
And I went down
To sleep on the couch with Leno on!
I heard you talking
When you called up your mother
After squawking
She bragged bout how much I love you
Then you came down
And sat on the couch with a smile on!
Honey Do
Scratched some things off my list today
I knew they’d win me points tonight
Fixed the porch swing-had your oil changed
I put new bulbs in every light- outside
Honey do you- honey do me
Like the names we carved in that willow tree
A heart around the two- on the day we said “I do”
Honey do I- Honey do you
There’s no better way for me to prove
That every word is true- and I’m so in love with you!
A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do
If he wants to… honey do-
Think I’ll cut- the grass before it rains
And throw the laundry in to dry
Had a tough time getting out the stains
From all that wine we spilled upstairs last night
Honey do you- honey do me
Like the names we carved in that willow tree
A heart around the two- on the day we said “I do”
Honey do I- Honey do you
Like a slice of pie with that summer fruit
To ache my sweetest tooth- when I crave the taste of you!
A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do
If he wants to… honey do-
Before I finish up- my busy day
I’m double checking things through twice
I can’t wait to collect my pay
That Honey Do’s gonna feel so nice
Honey do you- honey do me
Like the names we carved in that willow tree
A heart around the two- on the day we said “I do”
Honey do I- Honey do you
If it’s getting old let’s keep it new
I’m handy with my tools- when I fix my sights on you!
A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do
If he wants to… honey do-
Devil’s Dues
Bring me on back
I’ve been fading in a summertime dream
Laying in the shade near a rocky top stream
Waiting for the noon sun to finally break through
Never think twice
Just keep living in a simple man’s life
Must say the moonshine’s hitting quite nice
A little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
Smokey River wash away my worried mind
Don’t think I’ll… take much time kicking off them shoes
Walking in her there’s no telling what we’ll find
Said a- little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
A little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
Hot August night
Sweet loving woman gonna make it alright
Underneath the waterfall holding her tight
Giving and taking breaking all the rules
Never think twice
Just keep living in a simple man’s life
Must say the moonshine’s hitting quite nice
A little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
Smokey River wash away my worried mind
Don’t think I’ll… take much time kicking off them shoes
Walking in her there’s no telling what we’ll find
Said a- little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
A little bit of heaven pays the devil his dues
Bring me on back- Bring me on back- Bring me on back
Right down this Smokey River that
Washes away those troubled blues
Never think twice- Never think twice- Never think twice
Bout leaving out this simple life
The sun broke through right about noon
And I’m kicking off them Sunday shoes
Said a little bit of heaven pays the devil’s dues
Man that old devil’s living off my dues…
